The
Sydenham choir has the following tour and stage experience:
1. The choir starred
in A JEWISH MOCK WEDDING which premiered in 1984 in Johannesburg and Cape
Town, and had numerous reruns in Johannesburg.
2. The choir
with Oshy officiated at a shabbaton on two occasions in Durban - to
celebrate the 10th and 13th anniversaries of the Glenmore minyan - and gave
a concert on the one tour.
3. CELEBRATION
has been performed on 34 occasions to date, in

4. On 26th March 2006, the choir under the baton of Jose Stern, appeared in
a spectacular concert SYDENHAM SINGS. This was the first-ever
professionally staged production in the shul itself and featured Cantor
Yudi Cohen and special guest artist Cantor Oshy Tugendhaft, accompanied by
Prof. Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph on the piano. The repertoire was a mix of old
and new, traditional and contemporary, classical and chassidic.
5. On 15th November 2006, the choir, directed by Jose Stern, appeared in
concert with Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot (performing for the first time in
South Africa) and Cantor Yudi Cohen, accompanied by musical director, Prof.
Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph. This concert honoured two decades of dedicated
leadership by Rabbi Yossy Goldman.
On 7th
February 2010, the choir, directed by Jose Stern, appeared again in concert
with Cantor Meir Helfgot and Cantor
Avron Alter, accompanied by musical director Raymond Goldstein and the Kol
Rina Quartet. The gala concert, in aid of the Ashdod Medical Centre, took place
at the Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City in Johannesburg and in the presence
of Chief Rabbi Yisroel Meir Lau and Israeli Ambassador Dov Segev Steinberg.
6. On 14th March
2007, the choir formed the nucleus of the chorus, conducted by Jose Stern,
for the show VOICES which also featured Oshy Tugendhaft, Nachi Levin, Avron
Alter, Len Kay, Josh Alter, and Lionel Mkhwanazi. An African marimba band
augmented an 8 piece instrumental ensemble, led by Prof Jeanne
Zaidel-Rudolph. The show which was dedicated to the memory of Dr Malcolm
Zaidel z’l, was conceived by Jeanne, Malcolm’s sister and co-produced by
Jeanne, Oshy and Linda Starkowitz.
7. On 9th March
2008, the choir formed the nucleus of the chorus, conducted by Jose Stern,
for the show CELEBRATION 60 which also featured Oshy Tugendhaft, Azi
Shwartz, Len Kay and Micha Schachat. An African marimba band augmented a 9
piece instrumental ensemble, led by Prof Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph. The show
was presented by the South African Zionist Federation (SAZF), in association
with Mizrachi SA, as a tribute to the 60th anniversary of the State of
Israel. It was the brainchild of SAZF Director Isla Feldman, devised by
Oshy Tugendhaft and produced by Linda Starkowitz and Gavin Opert.
8. The choir,
conducted by Jose Stern, featured in the highly successful HIGH SHUL
MUSICAL; THE CHAZAN’S DREAM which was conceived and scripted by Yudi Cohen,
and co-directed by Yudi and Helen Heldenmuth. The production played to
three capacity and enthusiastic audiences at the revamped Victory Theatre
in October 2009 and also showcased Yudi’s musical quartet Diversity (for
